LA MACCHINA SCOPERTA
When we moved the complete contents of the old to the new news, our trusty Mirage Duette Idrocompresso went too. We certainly do, after all, need our espresso to start the day, and of course again and again to keep us going throughout the day.

This prompted me to dug out another old favorite, the Macchina Scoperta!

This contraption was done way back at the end of the nineties, before the turn of the century. These days we used to build Mistrals. To explain the Mistral’s virtues to visiting clients, we did this 1-group machine. It uses an old paddle type group of the original Marzoccco GS. The bakelite cap and paddle were long gone, so all brass parts were polished and chromed, to give it that technical look. The tubes were sandblasted, then chromed, to get a stainless look.
To keep it as clean as possible, all pump wiring was routed downwards, with a foot operated switch activating the pump.
Each flaming lamp is connected to one of the heating elements.

However, its most striking feature must surely be the steam whistle.
Please do not ask to have this on your Mirage, because even though it sits right on top of the hottest place imaginable, it gives an awful lot of condensation.
